A Milestone in Plant Conservation: Cycas annaikalensis at Green Ahalia
Green Ahalia has achieved a significant milestone in the conservation of Cycas annaikalensis, a Critically Endangered cycad species endemic to Anakkal, Malampuzha. With its extremely restricted distribution and poor natural regeneration, the species faces a high risk of extinction, underscoring the importance of immediate conservation action. Green Ahalia collected mature seeds from natural populations under appropriate permissions and scientific guidance. The seeds were successfully germinated using standardized propagation protocols, and healthy seedlings were established in the Green Ahalia Conservation Nursery. This achievement reflects Green Ahalia’s continued commitment to conserving the unique flora of the Western Ghats. By securing the future of one of Kerala’s rarest endemic plant species, Green Ahalia is contributing meaningfully to the long term conservation of the region’s rich botanical heritage.
