Reviving a Rare Endemic: Green Ahalia Successfully Propagates Elaeocarpus gadgilli
Green Ahalia has achieved a significant milestone in plant conservation through the successful propagation and transplantation of Elaeocarpus gadgilli, a rare endemic tree species of the Western Ghats. The species, reported from Palakkad district by A. M. Maya, V. Suresh, and K. M. P. Kumar. is known for its lack of natural regeneration, making its conservation particularly challenging. Using scientific propagation techniques, the Green Ahalia team successfully rooted stem cuttings in a mist chamber, raised healthy saplings under controlled nursery conditions on 25.06.2026. This achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of ex situ conservation and vegetative propagation in safeguarding rare endemic species that do not regenerate naturally. The successful establishment of Elaeocarpus gadgilli reinforces Green Ahalia’s commitment to the conservation of rare, endemic, and threatened (RET) plant species and the preservation of the unique biodiversity of the Western Ghats.
