Thyrsostachys oliveri Gamble
This bamboo is commonly known as Kornu locally in Palakkad and Thotti mula in Malayalam. T. oliveri is an introduced species in Kerala that forms thick compact clumps without basal branches. The culms are in young age with persistent greyish adpressed sheaths. The culms are near solid and are comparatively thin and narrowly tapering. The nodes are not pronounced. The culms grow to an average height of 15 to 25m and is hard and fetch good price in market. Commonly used in construction as reinforcement for concrete slabs, as poles, fishing rods, manufacturing of Sport goods, etc. Flowering cycle is reported to be around 48 to 50 years.
Green Ahalia is growing this bamboo species in the bambusetum and also as an avenue plant.
