This Week Plant – Sarcostemma acidum Voigt

Sarcostemma acidum Voigt (also known as ‘Somalatha’) is a perennial, twining shrub with woody base, belonging to Apocynaceae family. It has slender stems which contain milky latex, oval scale like leaves, and small, greenish-yellow flowers. Further, it is a medicinal plant with many health benefits and used in various Medical systems. The plant is used to treat a variety of ailments, including asthma, fever, cold, swelling, dyspepsia, and gastric problems. It is also used in Yagam like spiritual functions. As part of the present ABG programme, Green Ahalia has been successfully attempting on the vegetative propagation trials of this rare medicinal plant in the mist chamber facility at Green Ahalia.
