Plant of the Week – Oroxylum indicum (L.) Benth. ex Kurz
Oroxylum indicum (L.) Benth. ex Kurz (commonly known as Palakapayyani (Mal) or Indian trumpet tree (Eng) is a deciduous tree belonging to the family Bignoniaceae. The tree is notable for its large decompound leaves, unique, long, sword-shaped pods that reach upto 1m in length with numerous compressed seeds, trumpet-like reddish-purple coloured or yellowish green fragrant flowers and papery winged seeds. It is an important plant used in various Ayurvedic medicines and are spiritually significant. Parts of the tree, especially the roots and bark, are used in Ayurvedic formulations such as “Dasa moola”. Green Ahalia could successfully establish a conservation plot for this important medicinal plant. Our RET nursery has more than 3000 seedlings ready for planting.
