Ipomoea mauritiana Jacq.

Ipomoea is a species of morning glory belonging to the family Convolvulaceae. Palmuthuku (Ipomoea mauritiana) is seen cultivated in Palakkad district as it is a raw material for Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturing. This perennial climbing vine prefers abundant sunshine. The leaves are typically palmately lobed. The flowers are pink or reddish-purple in colour, often with a darker centre making it suitable as an ornamental plant. Ipomoea is propagated through different methods using, seeds, stem cuttings, tubers and micro propagation. The tuberous roots are used medicinally as a general tonic and to promote breast milk production. It is also an ingredient of Chyavanaprash. Recognising the rarity and demand of this plant, Green Ahalia is committed to its conservation and has a cultivation plot.
