Preserving the Planet’s Green Heritage: The Role of Plant Biodiversity Conservation

The Department of Botany, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, conducted a National Workshop on “Preserving the Planet’s Green Heritage: The Role of Plant Biodiversity Conservation” on 16th and 17th December 2025. The workshop was sponsored by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) under the Assistance to Botanic Gardens (ABG) Programme, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, as part of the Centenary Celebrations of Andhra University.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. G. P. Raja Sekhar, Vice-Chancellor, Andhra University. Dr. S. S. Dash served as the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker, highlighting the importance of plant biodiversity conservation and the role of botanic gardens in safeguarding threatened plant species.

Green Ahalia was represented by its members Mr. Sabik S and Mr. Midhun M, who actively participated in the workshop. Green Ahalia is one of the ABG Programme member garden, and the workshop provided valuable insights into conservation strategies, germplasm conservation, and collaborative efforts among botanic gardens.

Also visited the Biodiversity Parks- Botanical Garden in Visakhapatnam city. Visits were also made to the Zoo and Museums. During these visits, rare and other important plant species were collected from the Andhra University campus and other gardens.
