Tamarix dioica

Tamarix dioica belonging to the family Tamaricaceae is a tree externally looking like a Casuarina with slender needle like branches. The plants are dioecious and inflorescence pinkish spike like at branch tips. The plant is largely seen in riparian plains and grows gregariously. It is largely used as fuel by village communities. It is also used in Indian medical systems. In the district of Palakkad there is a single tree standing in Government Victoria College but precariously. To see the tree from peril, Green Ahalia has engaged to vegetatively multiply the plant using stem cuttings. We could produce almost 50 saplings this way and few are planted in ideal habitats. This will be the first attempt in the district for conservation of this single tree.
