Gymnema sylvestre R. Br.
Gymnema sylstre belonging to the family of Apocynaceae locally known as Sarkarakolli, Madhunasini is a woody much branched twining climber with latex and opposite dark green leaves. Flowers appear in axillary clusters, greenish yellow with a central column. Its popular as killer of sugar taste as we chew the leaves and is used in herbal medicines and Ayurvedic preparations. The fresh or dried leaves are used to manage blood sugar levels, promote insulin secretion, weight management, etc. The presence of Gymnemic acid in leaves inhibits the taste of sweetness in tongue and helps to control the sweet intake. Green Ahalia, considering its relevance in conservation and utilisation, is engaged in propagation and ex situ cultivation of this species.
